Jones, Evans on weight for Saturday’s main event
ATLANTA – After a fairly relaxed press conference on Wednesday, things were back to normal between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans on Friday.
Jones, who typically looks away from his opponents during weigh-in day faceoffs, did not for this one – his light heavyweight title defense against his former friend and training partner. This time, Jones looked right at Evans, and the two touched foreheads before being separated by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.
The fight, the main event at UFC 145 on Saturday, has been a long time coming. Jones got his title shot last year to begin with because Evans, then a teammate at Greg Jackson’s gym in New Mexico, was injured and couldn’t face Shogun Rua. Before the fight took place, Jones said he’d fight his teammate if he had to – and at that point, it was on.
Both Jones and Evans were on weight for the fight, arguably the most talked about grudge match in the UFC in more than five years. Evans came in a pound light at 204 pounds; Jones was on the number at 205.
Only John Makdessi was not on weight for the 12-fight card. The lightweight came in at 158 pounds for his fight against Anthony Njokuani, who was 156. Makdessi elected to forfeit 20 percent of his fight purse to Njokuani.
