Workouts, news conference, weigh-ins open to public
The lead-up to UFC 146 will include several events that are free and open to the public in Las Vegas.
UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir takes place next Saturday, May 26, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The pay-per-view features the first all-heavyweight main card in UFC history and includes a heavyweight title fight between champion Junior dos Santos, defending his belt for the first time, and former champion Frank Mir. Mir was moved into the title fight when top contender Alistair Overeem was removed and subsequently denied a license by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
In addition to the main event, the co-main event, which was originally supposed to be Mir vs. former champ Cain Velasquez for top contender status, now features Velasquez against Antonio Silva, who makes his UFC debut after a five-fight run in Strikeforce. Plus, Roy Nelson fights Dave “Pee Wee” Herman, Stefan Struve meets Mark Hunt and Stipe Miocic takes on Shane Del Rosario.
On Wednesday, fans can attend fighter workouts at the MGM Grand. The sessions begin at 10 a.m. Pacific time in Studio ballrooms A and B near the entrance to the MGM Grand Garden Arena. All 10 heavyweights on the main card will take part in workout sessions in half-hour blocks from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
On Thursday, the pre-fight news conference for the fight card, again featuring all 10 heavyweights on the pay-per-view, will take place in the main lobby of the MGM Grand. The press conference will be hosted by UFC commentator Jon Anik and is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. Pacific until noon.
And on Friday, fans can attend the official weigh-in event for UFC 146. Fighters will step on the scale at the MGM Grand Garden Arena starting at 4 p.m. Pacific. Doors open for the general public at 3 p.m. But members of the UFC’s Fight Club can gain entrance at 1 p.m. and attend a 2 p.m. question-and-answer session with top UFC bantamweight contender Urijah Faber.
