Chan Sung Jung doubles up with $40,000 awards
Chan Sung Jung apparently could not care less about underdog status.
“The Korean Zombie” put on perhaps the best performance of his career, upsetting Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 3 on Tuesday night. And the result was not just one, but two post-fight bonus awards.
Jung took home a pair of $40,000 bonuses, one for Fight of the Night, which also went to Poirier, and one for Submission of the Night for his fourth-round D’Arce choke that put “The Diamond” to sleep. The Knockout of the Night award went to Tom Lawlor for his quick first-round KO of Jason MacDonald.
UFC president Dana White announced the bonus winners following the card, which took place at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The bonus winners all came from the main card, which aired live on the Fuel TV cable network.
Jung now has five post-fight bonus awards in his five Zuffa fights, though his first two fights in the WEC were losses prior to the WEC-UFC merger. But Jung has been a different fighter since coming to the UFC. He now is 3-0 in the promotion with a submission win over Leonard Garcia, a seven-second knockout win over Mark Hominick in December and now this submission win over Poirier that could have him knocking on the door for a shot at the featherweight title.
Lawlor’s knockout bonus couldn’t have been better timed – Tuesday was the middleweight’s 29th birthday. His present for his 50-second knockout of MacDonald was a $40,000 extra check. MacDonald now has lost three of his last four since returning to the UFC.
