Roop Injured, Pineda Steps In Against Carvalho At UFC 149

Daniel Pineda in for George Roop at UFC 149

An injury to UFC featherweight George Roop has forced the WEC veteran out of his UFC 149 bout against Antonio Carvalho.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed the news earlier today.

In his place, Daniel Pineda will step in against Carvalho on the July 21 card, set for Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome on July 21.

Pineda last competed against former WEC champion Mike Brown at UFC 146, dropping a unanimous decision to the American Top Team product. A seven-fight winning streak was snapped by that loss, though he is a respectable 2-1 in the UFC.

The same cannot be said for Carvalho, who is 0-1 with the promotion after his debut loss to Felipe Arantes at UFC 142. That loss snapped the Canadian’s three-fight winning streak.

The featherweight replacement announced today is, unfortunately, not the first hit the division has taken just on this card. A main event between 145 lb. champion Jose Aldo and top contender Erik Koch was to serve as the headliner, but an injury to the champ forced the bout’s removal.

Now, a bantamweight interim title bout will serve as the evening’s featured fight, as Urijah Faber and Renan Barao are scheduled for five rounds.
