Carwin, Nelson set as TUF 16 Coaches

Heavyweights Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson will be opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 16” later this year.

The sixteenth season of the reality series will air on FX this fall, but will not feature the live format of the previous season. The promotion and FX broadcast live fights as a part of “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” earlier this year, but it was not deemed a successful route for the show.

“This is going to be a very interesting dynamic between these two heavyweights,” White said. “They both have huge punching power and great chins, but outside of the octagon, they couldn’t be any more different.”

A former top contender, Carwin has not fought in over a year. He last competed opposite Junior dos Santos at UFC 131, losing via unanimous decision. Prior to that loss, he lost to then-champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 via submission.

Following the two losses, Carwin had back surgery and is expected to be ready to get back in the cage in the fall.

Meanwhile, Nelson has managed to stay busy, fighting four times between May of 2011 and 2012. He last competed at UFC 146, earning a knockout victory over Dave Herman within the first minute of the first round.

“The Ultimate Fighter 16” will air on FX this fall, while the finale will take place in Las Vegas this December.
