“UFC on FOX 5” main card lands three high profile bouts
Three monster match ups have been added to “UFC on FOX 5.”
The card will be headlined by a main event between lightweight champion Benson Henderson and top contender Nate Diaz, while a light heavyweight tilt between Alexander Gustafsson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will serve as the co-main event.
The third bout is a contest between Rory MacDonald and B.J. Penn, which was supposed to take place at UFC 152, but an injury to MacDonald caused the postponement of the match up.
MMAjunkie.com and USA Today Sports first reported the news.
“UFC on FOX 5” takes place on December 8, though a venue and host city have yet to be announced.
The lightweight title bout will be the second championship contest to broadcast during a “UFC on FOX” event. The first was a heavyweight title fight between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez at the “UFC on FOX 1.”
The three fights expected for the card immediately make this event the most high-profile event to hit FOX since the UFC and the company came to an agreement on a network deal.
Also, it comes at an interesting time, as many have been critical of the promotion for the pay-per-view card lineups as of late.
