Terrence Malick, one of the most existentially gifted filmmakers ever created, usually takes decades between projects, but the man must have hit a vein of creativity even since his critically acclaimed Tree of Life, with Brad Pitt, released last year.
His follow-up, To The Wonder, looks like a sweeping story of love and all its beauties and warts, and damn if it isn’t one of the most gorgeous trailers I’ve seen that doesn’t include a ton of special effects and CGI wizardry.
There’s perhaps no one in the business today who can take the use of a camera and use it so creatively through perfect staging, blocking, use of natural light, and creative movement. Just the one staircase scene in the trailer took my breath away. I cannot wait to see this film. I just hope Ben Affleck doesn’t ruin it.
To The Wonder also stars Javier Bardem, and Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko as the two women involved in Affleck’s triangle of love.
