Criminal isn’t easy to follow, but it’s not supposed to be: this Steven Soderbergh-produced tale of trickery is in itself one big con, a bait-and-switch done with style, skill and more than a little mischief. John C. Reilly is excellent as the amoral (but well-dressed) crook whose own confidence game gets the better of him (or does it?) when he takes on Diego Luna as an apprentice; Maggie Gyllenhaal is stone-cold sexiness as Reilly’s sister to whom Luna takes a shine. The film’s final twist isn’t so much necessary as it is inevitable; while the end of this deceitful journey may not be as satisfying as the actual getting there, Criminal is still worth your time… and confidence. Or is it?
