New On Netflix: The Muppets Take Manhattan

The only thing wrong with The Muppets Take Manhattan, Kermit and the gang’s third big-screen adventure, is that it’s not quite as good as either The Muppet Movie or The Great Muppet Caper. Which means it’s still pretty much as close to perfect as a movie can be. Frank Oz made his solo feature directorial debut (after co-directing The Dark Crystal with Jim Henson) with this big-hearted tale of the Big Apple in which the Muppets pursue their dream of becoming Broadway stars. The city’s trademark cynicism and bizarre denizens (including then-Mayor Ed Koch) are portrayed with such a sweet affection that you’ll be tempted to move to New York yourself — or give it a great big hug if you live there already. You also get the landmark occassion of the marriage of Kermit and Miss Piggy, a ceremony that also features several Sesame Street characters as guests, and the first appearance of the Muppet Babies. Enjoy!
