This sci-fi punk rock fable from writer-director Alex Cox features one of the best soundtracks of the ’80s (featuring Iggy Pop, Circle Jerks, Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies, amongst others), a bunch of Los Angeles auto repossessors named after beers, various UFO conspiracy theorists, a crazy rogue scientist, creepy FBI agents and Tracey Walter (Bob from Tim Burton‘s Batman) flying away in an alien-powered 1964 Chevy Malibu. Repo Man, starring Emilio Estevez (quite good) and Harry Dean Stanton (quite great), certainly isn’t for everyone, and there are a few moments where it might be trying a little too hard to be “weird” and “edgy” (before it was “cool” to do so), but it’s essential viewing for anyone looking to enhance their altered state — and for anyone “looking for the dope with a microscope,” as Iggy once proudly proclaimed.
