An underrated and surprisingly harrowing vision of the zombie apocalypse, Night of the Comet deserves a place next to both Liquid Sky and Repo Man as a somewhat obscure and almost impossibly clever ’80s genre film that actually deserves its “cult” status. The comet that apparently wiped out the dinosaurs is a’headin’ toward Earth again, and this time it wipes out everyone on the planet except for a handful of survivors, including two Valley Girls (Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney) who end up fighting zombies and running from the scientists that want to harvest their “healthy” blood. Yes, there is a (rather terrific) sequence set to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in which our two heroines invade the now-abandoned shopping mall. But don’t think Night of the Comet is just a goof; it’s actually ends up being almost as powerful — and brilliantly satirical — as anything George Romero ever cooked up. And yes, Stewart eventually finds out who beat her high score on Tempest before it’s all over.
