This remake of the terrific 1971 crime film starring Michael Caine had “career comeback” written all over it for Sylvester Stallone… but then again, so did Cop Land. Nothing quite clicks in this revenge flick, though it sure as hell tries hard — and Stallone himself tries the hardest as he attempts to bring a genuine emotional complexity to his role as Jack Carter, a mob enforcer who returns home to Seattle to attend the funeral of his brother, Ritchie. When it turns out that Ritchie was murdered, Carter uncovers a stinging wasp’s nest of conspiracy, pornography, prostitution and Mickey Rourke. Get Carter is rich with grim, dirty atmosphere (and it confirms that it sure as hell rains a lot in Seattle) but way short on plot and characterization, even with Sly breaking down in tears during his would-be heartfelt scene with his victimized niece (Rachael Leigh Cook). Caine himself appears in a supporting role and seems genuinely amused to be doing so.
