Whatcha gonna do? Bad Girls is a Western with no shame, as you can probably tell from its brazen B-movie title — it’s a film that is more than happy to exploit the fact that it has four hot ladies in cowgirl outfits making the Wild West both wilder and sexier. This is an awful movie, but one you can’t help but love at least a little as Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore (all playing former harlots) shoot and steal their way through the rugged trails of Colorado, kicking up dust and the kind of mayhem that soon gets the attention of the Pinkertons (and some fellow criminals, and someone from Stowe’s dark and shady past, and probably some lizards, too). Dermot Mulroney of Young Guns makes an appearance and Robert Loggia hams it up as the big villain — the ladies, meanwhile, pave the way for Sharon Stone to scowl and stare her way through Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead, which was released the following year. The tagline kind of sums up the entire film’s knack for mistaking awkwardness for rough and tumble poignancy: “It was a dangerous time to be a woman. And a good time to have friends.” Huh?
