Deni Avdija Latest News
Coming off bench Sunday
Avdija will come off the bench during Sunday's game against the Grizzlies, Sean Highkin of RoseGardenReport.com reports. Avdija will come off the bench for the first time this season due to Shaedon Sharpe entering the starting lineup. Avdija has had a dip in production of late, posting single-digit scoring outputs in three consecutive games.
Efficient in limited attempts
Avdija produced nine points (3-5 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-5 FT), seven rebounds and five assists over 25 minutes during Thursday's 118-105 loss to the Spurs. Avdija has produced an inefficient start to the year, during which he has shot only 35.9 percent from the field and 20.0 percent from deep. The 23-year-old has struggled in a new setting this season, and he has taken a backseat to the club's top options in Anfernee Simons, Jerami Grant and Deandre Ayton. With Shaedon Sharpe making his return to game action, it's possible that Avdija sees a decrease in playing time, and Sharpe could even replace Avdija in the starting five eventually.
Records double-double in victory
Avdija chipped in 13 points (3-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 6-6 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal over 29 minutes during Wednesday's 106-105 win over the Clippers. Avdija made some key plays during the team's second win, including a critical blocked shot that kept Norman Powell from putting the game away. Jerami Grant scored only eight points, and early results indicate a negative correlation between the two players. Through five games, they've played alongside each other without much of a break. Their playing styles are somewhat similar, and there isn't enough room for both of them to record good results at the same time. Once the team builds some more cohesiveness, enough space will be created for both players to excel.
Scores 15 points with new team
Avdija totaled 15 points (4-10 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 7-8 FT), seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 27 minutes during Wednesday's 139-104 loss to the Warriors. If Avdija continues to excel, he may keep the starting job when Shaedon Sharpe (shoulder) returns. Sharpe should be ready to go soon. and the situation will be worth monitoring as the former first-round pick tries to prove his worth with a new team.
Not on injury report
Avdija (personal) isn't listed on Portland's injury report for Sunday's preseason game against the Kings. Avdija missed Friday's preseason opener in Los Angeles due to personal reasons but will make his Trail Blazers debut Sunday. He's expected to start and play a critical role during his first season in Portland.
Out for Friday's preseason game
Avdija (personal) will not play in Friday's preseason game against the Clippers. Avdija is missing Friday's contest in Los Angeles, the first of three preseason opportunities before the Blazers tip off the regular season at home vs. Golden State. His next chance to play would be Sunday evening against the Kings.
Traded to Portland
The Wizards traded Avdija to the Trail Blazers on Wednesday in exchange for Malcolm Brogdon, the No. 14 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and a 2029 pick, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Avdija had a career year for the Wizards in 2023-24, averaging 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 30.1 minutes across 75 appearances (all starts). Avdija's fit in Portland is unclear. Jerami Grant signed a massive extension last offseason, and Shaedon Sharpe was a lottery pick in 2022 who showed promise last season before an abdomen injury shut him down. In Portland's backcourt, Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons are expected to lead the way. Avdija signed a four-year, $55 million deal with Washington last season and is owed $15.6 million next season.
Good to go Friday
Avdija (illness) is available for Friday's game versus the Bulls. Avdija has been upgraded from questionable to available Friday despite dealing with a non-COVID illness. The 22-year-old forward is averaging 18.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 35.8 minutes across his last 10 outings.
Iffy against Chicago
Avdija is listed as questionable for Friday's game versus the Bulls due to a non-COVID illness. It appears an illness is spreading throughout Washington's locker room, as Jordan Poole and Eugene Omoruyi are also questionable due to a non-COVID illness. If Avdija is ruled out, Johnny Davis, Patrick Baldwin, and Anthony Gill are all candidates to receive increased playing time.
