At this point, he is basically the fourth-string center in the Mavericks rotation, playing behind Dereck Lively (ankle), Daniel Gafford and Maxi Kleber.
Non-existent role continues
Powell notched no counting stats in one minute during Tuesday's 118-104 loss to the Thunder. Powell continues to play a limited role off the bench, currently averaging 8.1 minutes per game across 19 games played. The Mavericks have two centers ahead of Powell in the rotation, something that does not bode well for his immediate playing future. At this stage, Powell would need both Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford out of the way to have any chance of playing a meaningful role.
Limited run in loss
Powell ended Thursday's 115-113 loss to the Jazz with zero points (0-1 FG), three rebounds, three assists and two blocks over 13 minutes. The veteran center reached the double-digit mark in minutes for his fourth consecutive contest, and he has seen a slight uptick in playing time with P.J. Washington (knee) sidelined. Powell has appeared in four of the Mavericks' last five games, during which Dereck Lively and Washington have both missed time. In this four-game span, Powell has averaged 4.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 0.8 steals across 18.0 minutes per game.
Scoreless again in loss
Powell played seven minutes in Monday's 134-127 loss to the Pacers and did not record a stat. While Powell has yet to contribute meaningful minutes this season, his opportunity could come with Maxi Kleber (hamstring) out and Dereck Lively (shoulder) questionable for Wednesday's game versus Chicago. When they return, however, it is likely Powell will see the court only in limited fashion for the majority of contests.
Scores nine in victory
Powell compiled nine points (3-3 FG, 3-4 FT), two steals and one rebound in 19 minutes during Canada's 88-85 win over Spain on Friday. Powell was held to single-digit points once again during Friday's matchup, but he recorded multiple steals for a second consecutive game. It wouldn't be surprising to see him maintain a starting role during the knockout round, but he's been a somewhat inconsistent contributor to begin the Olympics.
Returns to reserve role
Powell won't start Game 1 of the opening-round series against the Clippers on Sunday, Law Murray of The Athletic reports. With Dallas resting its regulars, Powell drew a spot start during the regular-season finale and posted two points, eight rebounds, a steal and a block in 27 minutes during a loss to Oklahoma City. With Dereck Lively (knee) and Daniel Gafford healthy, Powell isn't guaranteed consistent playing time during the postseason.
Starting Sunday
Powell will start in Sunday's regular-season finale versus Oklahoma City. Powell is joined by Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Josh Green in the frontcourt Sunday. Powell ascended to 21 minutes of action in Friday's loss to Detroit while the Mavericks rest other key contributors, and he will likely reprise a similar workload in Game 82.
Low playing time continues Thursday
Powell recorded two points (1-1 FG, 0-1 FT) and three rebounds in eight minutes during Thursday's 109-95 victory over the Hawks. Powell hasn't seen meaningful playing time since the trade deadline Feb. 8, which coincides with the Mavericks acquiring Daniel Gafford from the Wizards. Powell is firmly behind Gafford and Maxi Kleber in the big man rotation, even with Dereck Lively expected to miss time due to a right knee injury. The last time Powell scored in double digits was Dec. 28 against the Timberwolves.
Grabs board in brief appearance
Powell racked up zero points (0-1 FG), two rebounds and one assist in five minutes during Monday's 127-92 win over Chicago. Before the Daniel Gafford trade on Jan. 8, Powell averaged 4.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in 15.8 minutes, compared to just 1.0 points and 0.9 rebounds in 5.3 minutes since. With Dereck Lively (nose) returning to the rotation consistently, expect Powell to receive limited minutes behind Gafford, Lively and Maxi Kleber.
