Undergoes successful surgery
The 76ers announced Tuesday that McCain underwent successful surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear and remains out indefinitely, Tim Bontemps of ESPN.com reports. McCain suffered his left meniscus tear against Indiana and is set for extended absence. While Philadelphia has yet to rule the rookie guard out for the rest of the season, Eric Gordon will likely continue to receive increased playing time.
Suffers miniscus tear
The 76ers announced Saturday that following Friday's game versus the Pacers, an MRI revealed a lateral meniscus tear in McCain's left knee. The rookie guard will undergo surgery and is out indefinitely, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reports. McCain's meniscus is a major blow to Philadelphia, as the team's laundry list of injuries has resulted in a 7-16 record. McCain had been the Rookie of the Year frontrunner, as he was averaging 15.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 25.7 minutes on 46.0/38.3/87.5 shooting splits across his first 23 appearances. While the 20-year-old guard hasn't been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign yet, he is set to miss a significant period. Reggie Jackson and Kyle Lowry (back) are candidates to receive increased playing time in his absence.
Starts second half Friday
McCain (concussion) finished with five points (2-6 FG, 1-2 3Pt), one rebound and three assists over 29 minutes during Friday's 121-107 loss to the Pacers. McCain was able to return to Friday's contest after being evaluated for a concussion, and while his output in the box score was muted, it's worth noting he started the second half for the injured Joel Embiid (face). The rookie first-rounder has shined when given the chance to be a member of the first unit this season, averaging 23.8 points, 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 3.6 three-pointers in 36.6 minutes per game over eight appearances as a starter. If Embiid can't play in Monday's game against Charlotte, McCain would be a candidate to join the starting lineup and likely offer more fantasy upside if tasked with an enhanced role.
Checks back into game Friday
McCain (concussion) cleared the concussion protocol and checked back into Friday's game against the Pacers, Kyle Neubeck of AllPHLY.com reports. McCain suffered a hard fall and smacked his head on the floor in the process. While it was believed he wouldn't be allowed to return to the game due to the concussion protocol, he seems to have passed the tests, meaning he can return.
Heads to locker room
McCain suffered a hard fall and was taken off Friday's game against the Pacers and straight into the locker room to be checked out due to a possible concussion, Austin Krell of USA Today reports. McCain suffered a hard fall to the court that included a smack of his head to the floor, and while he tried to shoot his free throws, the 76ers elected to remove him from the game right away. If he clears the concussion protocol while in the locker room, McCain would be eligible to return, and he returned to the bench shortly after exiting the contest. His status for the rest of the game is questionable.
Back to bench role Friday
McCain is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Magic, Kyle Neubeck of AllPHLY.com reports. McCain will move back to a bench role with the return of Paul George to the starting unit. The rookie out of Duke is averaging 11.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 three-pointers made when coming off the bench this season.
Shines in return to first unit
McCain provided 24 points (10-17 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 1-3 FT), seven rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes during Wednesday's 106-102 loss to Orlando. Back in Philadelphia's starting lineup after coming off the bench for the past two games, McCain provided an instant spark to a 76ers offense missing Joel Embiid (knee) and Paul George (rest) with his team-high 24 points. The rookie first-rounder has made the most of his opportunities as a member of the first unit this year, averaging 23.8 points, 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 3.6 three-pointers in 36.6 minutes per game over eight appearances as a starter. No matter what his role is in head coach Nick Nurse's rotation going forward, McCain figures to be an excellent source of points and triples for fantasy managers as an early Rookie of the Year candidate.
Back in first unit
McCain will start Wednesday's game against the Magic. McCain started seven straight games before returning to the second unit for Philadelphia's previous pair of contests. He'll return to the starting five Wednesday while Paul George (rest) and Joel Embiid (knee) are sidelined. McCain averaged 23.7 points, 4.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals across those seven starts.
Lights it up from deep off bench
McCain posted 17 points (7-10 FG, 3-4 3Pt), one rebound, two assists and two steals across 22 minutes during Tuesday's 110-104 victory over Charlotte. McCain once again provided Philadelphia with a strong spark off the bench Tuesday, leading all bench players in scoring and threes made while swiping a team-high-tying pair of steals on the defensive side. McCain has tallied at least 15 points in 12 outings this season, including in nine of his last 10 contests.
