He has scored a total of just eight points, and at this point, there is no reason to think he will be playing a sizeable role for this Mavericks team.
The Mavericks signed Gortman to a two-way deal Friday, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com reports. In a series of related moves, the Mavericks waived A.J. Lawson in order to bring Gortman in on a two-way pact. The 21-year-old impressed in the preseason, during which he averaged 10.3 points while shooting 51.6 percent from the field. The guard is expected to spend the majority of his time with the Mavericks' G League affiliate, the Texas Legends.
Gortman will come off the bench in Thursday's preseason game against the Bucks. Gortman drew an opportunity to start at point guard in Monday's exhibition against the Clippers, but he'll return to a reserve role as the Mavs will roll out the usual starts Thursday evening.

Gortman has flashed promise so far in the preseason, as he dropped 19 points off the bench in the opener against Memphis.
Gortman finished Monday's 121-116 loss to the Grizzlies with 19 points (7-13 FG, 4-7 3Pt, 1-1 FT), three rebounds, three assists and four steals over 25 minutes. Gortman led the Mavericks in steals Monday, and he finished the game as the team's second-leading scorer behind Jaden Hardy (21). Gortman signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Dallas in July, and the 21-year-old is attempting to earn a permanent spot on the Mavericks' roster by the end of the preseason.
