Agrees to one-year deal with SAS
Flynn and the Spurs agreed to a one-year deal Wednesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The Pistons didn't extend Flynn a $5.81 million qualifying offer at the end of June, making him an unrestricted free agent. Despite dropping 50 points off Detroit's bench against the Hawks on April 3, Flynn finished 2023-24 with averages of 5.5 points, 1.9 assists and 1.7 rebounds across 12.7 minutes in 69 regular-season games split between Toronto, New York and Detroit. Flynn will look to compete for a spot in San Antonio's backcourt, which added Stephon Castle and Chris Paul this offseason to a group that already consisted of Tre Jones, Devin Vassell and Malaki Branham.
Headed for free agency
The Pistons didn't extend Flynn a $5.81 million qualifying offer Saturday, making him an unrestricted free agent, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. Flynn notably dropped 50 points off the bench in an April 3 game Atlanta, but that was essentially the only highlight of his season. All told, the 26-year-old averaged 5.5 points, 1.9 assists and 1.7 rebounds across 12.7 minutes in 69 regular-season games while bouncing around between the Raptors, Knicks and Pistons. Flynn will look to catch on elsewhere in free agency as a reserve guard.
Crashes down to earth Friday
Flynn accumulated three points (0-12 FG, 0-7 3Pt, 3-4 FT), one rebound, six assists and two steals over 23 minutes during Friday's 108-90 loss to the Grizzlies. Flynn was coming off a career-high 50 points in the loss to the Hawks on Wednesday, but he regressed and crashed down to earth Friday. However, this two-game stretch might be the best way to summarize Flynn's career, as he can be extremely inconsistent with his scoring figures on a game-to-game basis. No one would've expected him to miss all of his 12 field goals just two days after scoring 50 points, and Flynn will aim to bounce back against the Nets on Saturday.
Erupts for career-high 50 points
Flynn totaled 50 points (18-25 FG, 5-9 3Pt, 9-12 FT), six rebounds, five assists and three steals across 34 minutes off the bench in Wednesday's 121-113 loss to the Hawks. For the first month after he was acquired Feb. 8 in a trade with the Knicks, Flynn was an inconsistent member of the Pistons' rotation, but his role has been trending upward of late while Detroit has held out several key players with injuries. Cade Cunningham (knee) was a late scratch Wednesday and joined six other Pistons in street clothes, and while Flynn didn't replace him in the starting five, Cunningham's absence paved the way for the San Diego State product to turn in what was far and away a career-best performance. Flynn nearly doubled up his previous career-best total of 27 points and became just the third reserve player in NBA history to reach the 50-point mark in a game, joining Jamal Crawford (51 for the Suns in 2019) and Nick Anderson (50 for the Magic in 1993). In addition to the big scoring night on efficient shooting, Flynn also set or matched his season highs in rebounds and steals. Flynn will be in store for a role reduction if Cunningham is back for the Pistons' next game Friday in Memphis, but the huge performance certainly puts Flynn on the radar as a streaming option if Cunningham misses any contests over the final week and a half of the season.
Stuffs stat sheet Monday
Flynn finished with 14 points (5-12 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals over 30 minutes during Monday's 124-99 loss to New York. Flynn posted a solid stat line off the bench in a game where the Pistons looked overmatched. He has the talent to score at will on any given game, but Flynn is not going to have a lot of upside if he continues to play off the bench for a team that's already out of playoff contention.
Posts season high off bench in loss
Flynn contributed 17 points (6-12 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 2-3 FT), four rebounds, four assists and one steal across 25 minutes during Sunday's 114-101 loss to New Orleans. Flynn connected on a team-high-tying trio of threes while leading all Pistons bench players in assists and posting a team-high-tying point total in a losing effort. Flynn set a new season high in scoring, having crossed the double-digit mark in six games this year. His previous season high in scoring was 14 points, which occurred Nov. 22 with the Raptors in a game against Indiana.
Scores 11 in shorthanded backcourt
Flynn posted 11 points (3-8 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 3-4 FT), two rebounds, one assist and two steals in 18 minutes during Monday's 119-94 loss to the Celtics. Flynn set a new personal high for his Detroit tenure with 18 minutes of action Monday, although the 25-year-old has been an inconsistent part of the rotation of late, picking up five healthy scratches across Detroit's last eight games. Flynn could once again be subtracted from the rotation if Cade Cunningham (knee) is able to return Wednesday versus Indiana.
