A bomb threat was called into police claim there was a bomb at the Eiffel Tower, reports AGI.

1. The Threat was Phoned to Police at Around 9:30 p.m. Local Time, 5:30 p.m. EST

Local reports say that staff and tourists were told to leave the iconic structure and the surrounding area by 6:00 p.m. local time.

2. Around 1500 People had to be Evacuated From the Landmark

In what has been described as an “unusual” move, the monument’s own security staff were also asked to leave the area as well.

3. The Landmark was Searched and No Bomb was Found

The site reopened on Saturday night, the search was thorough but turned up no bomb. Sniffer dogs and military personnel were used in the search.

4. French Authorities Have Stepped up Security Lately

This has mainly been done around popular landmarks due to France’s role in fighting Islamist terrorists in Mali. French troops made news today as they captured seven tonnes of ammunition from rebel fighters. France’s military is due to stay in Mali until 2014.

5. The Eiffel Tower was Evacuated Twice in 2011 due to Terrorist Threats

Nearly exactly two years ago the tourist attraction was evacuated, some 4000 tourists were removed from the area then, after a suspect package was identified. It was subsequently deemed to be a false alarm.
