Massive Pile Up in Alberta Sends 100 to the Hospital

A massive multi-vehicle car crash on Highway 2, just south of Edmonton, has sent 100 people to the hospital.

According to Alberta Health Services, there have been no fatalities announced yet, but at least four people are seriously injured.

Because of the overwhelming number of injuries, patients have been sent to hospitals in Edmonton, Red Deer, Leduc, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Devon, Wetaskiwin, Stony Plain, Lamont and Camrose.

The series of accidents, said to involve up to 200 cars, was caused by a snowstorm that affected visibility and traction on the road.

Derek Fildebrandt, who was on the highway at the time, told the CBC he saw numerous vehicles go off the road.

It’s a massive, massive crash. It extended, got to be at least a few kilometres. Cars [were] flying off into the ditches beside us, smashing into each other on the road and in the ditches. [There was] very little room to manoeuvre.
