One of the stars of Gilmore Girls has died at the age of 71. Edward Hermann passed away in New York City on December 31.

Here’s what you need to know:


1. He Had Been Battling Brain Cancer

Herrmann had been battling brain cancer and was undergoing chemo in New York, reports TMZ. The site reports that over the holidays that actor’s condition worsened and the decision was taken to take him off a respirator.


2. Herrmann Had Just Launched a $14.5 Million Lawsuit Against His Former Accountant

Earlier in December 2014, the New York Daily News reported that Herrmann and his wife were suing their former accountants for $14.5 million. The actor claimed his financial people had misappropriated his funds. He said that he and his wife had trusted the firm, CohnReznick, to “maintain their economic health,” reports Page Six. The lawsuit was filed on December 11. Just under three weeks before Herrmann’s death.


3. He’ll Be Forever Remembered as Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls


He is best known for his role as Richard Gilmore on the hit show Gilmore Girls. You can watch him action above.

More recently he had appeared on the CBS hit The Good Wife.


4. Herrmann Is Survived by His Wife & 5 Kids

He’s survived by his five children and second wife Star Hayner. The couple lived in Salisbury, Connecticut, together. According to his wife’s Facebook page, the couple made regular trips into New York City.

His stepson, Rory Hermann, is one of the most popular chefs in California, servicing as the director of operations for the Sprout Restaurant Group in Los Angeles.

5. His Love of Cars Was Legendary

He was known for his love of classic cars. In March 2010, the New York Times featured Herrmann’s extensive car collection. Hermann had hosted the show Automobiles on the History Channel. During the 1990s, he had been a spokesman with Dodge.
