Many people were injured, however. The Hartford Courant newspaper reports that 30 to 40 people were injured when the balcony collapsed. WFSB now gives the total number of those injured as 31 and says the most serious injuries are broken bones and lacerations.

Deputy Hartford police chief Brian Foley posted photos of the balcony collapse on his Twitter page. He tweeted that, “3rd floor collapsed on 2nd floor, which collapsed on 1st floor.”

Foley also said that there were no major injuries. The mayor released a statement:

Trinity is a liberal arts college located in the heart of Hartford, Connecticut, according to its website. The school’s website describes the college as “in some ways, a traditional New England college. We teach the liberal arts and sciences on a beautiful, 100-acre campus with classic collegiate architecture” but adds that it values independent thinking.

Foley tweeted that the balcony collapsed at an off-campus party. According to The New York Daily News, Hartford property data shows the building is 91 years old and “is owned by the Trustees of Trinity College.” WFSB says Trinity owns it and the students who live there are “part of Greek life.”

Earlier reports had sounded more dire; they said multiple people were injured and that people might be trapped:

One young woman tweeted that she had just left the party:
