(Getty)

Winter Storm Stella is on its way, with many states predicting 12 inches of snow or more by tomorrow. But when will this blizzard arrive? People in New York, Boston, Maryland, Pennsylvania, D.C., and other states are wondering how long they have to prepare for the storm’s arrival. Hundreds of flights have already been canceled, schools are closing tomorrow, and people are hunkering down for what could be blizzard conditions in some areas. What time is the weather going to start getting bad?

Although a storm’s arrival can’t be predicted exactly, meteorologists are doing their best to determine what time things could get bad. Blizzard watches are currently in effect for parts of eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and winter storm warnings are issued for areas including Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and D.C. Blizzard warnings have also been issued for New York City, parts of northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. Here are the estimates currently available, as of the time of publication:

In general, you’ll start seeing light snow on Monday night, getting heavier by Tuesday morning. The heaviest snowfall amounts are expected Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Some areas could get as much as two feet of snow.

Here are more specific predictions:

You’ll start seeing snow start to develop in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the mid-Atlantic region on Monday night, according to Weather.com. At this time, snow could drop at one to two inches an hour.

Areas farther north, like New York City and southern New England, will start seeing snow by late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The heaviest snowfall is likely to happen on Tuesday in the Northeast, with snow falling at one to four inches an hour, and blizzard-like conditions occurring in coastal regions. In Boston, for example, expect the heaviest snow to happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday:

The New England area will continue to see snow, sometimes heavy, on Tuesday night. Farther south, snow will start lightening on Tuesday evening.

The worst of the storm will be over by Wednesday, according to Weather.com.

Areas expecting the most snowfall include regions west of I-95: New York, Albany, Boston, Portland, Hartford, Maine, and Pennsylvania.
