Samuel (ribs/wrist) won't take part in Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Samuel has yet to mix into drills this week due to two health concerns and thus may need to practice in some capacity Friday to avoid a designation ahead of Sunday's game at Arizona. With Brock Purdy (elbow) unlikely to play this weekend, Samuel will be on the receiving end of passes from Joshua Dobbs, assuming the wide receiver is active.

DNP on Thursday
Samuel (ribs/wrist) won't take part in Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Samuel has yet to mix into drills this week due to two health concerns and thus may need to practice in some capacity Friday to avoid a designation ahead of Sunday's game at Arizona. With Brock Purdy (elbow) unlikely to play this weekend, Samuel will be on the receiving end of passes from Joshua Dobbs, assuming the wide receiver is active.
Dealing with pair of injuries
Samuel won't participate in Wednesday's practice due to rib and knee injuries, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Since the 49ers' Week 9 bye, Samuel has managed more than 40 yards from scrimmage just two times in eight games, turning 46 touches into 334 total yards and two receiving touchdowns during that span. With a pair of new health concerns in tow, it's unclear whether he may be in danger of missing Sunday's season finale in Arizona, but the next two days of work likely will determine if he has a chance to suit up this weekend.
Scores short TD on MNF
Samuel brought in his only target for a five-yard touchdown while adding 16 rushing yards on three attempts in Monday's 40-34 loss to the Lions. Samuel saw his usage drop back down to levels seen during his horrid second-half slump, but a short touchdown grab helped salvage what would have been a rough fantasy outing. The underperforming superstar carries a 51-670-3 receiving line into the final week of the regular season to go along with 134 rushing yards and a fourth score in 15 starts this year. Samuel will have one more chance to up his offseason free agency bid in Sunday's road tilt against the Cardinals.
Wakes up in Week 16
Samuel caught seven of nine targets for 96 yards and a touchdown while adding 25 rushing yards on five attempts in Sunday's 29-17 loss to Miami. Samuel finally broke out of the worst slump of his professional career by recording his best fantasy score to date in 2024. The dual-threat receiver also finished with his most rushing yards in a game this year with San Francisco being forced to start a running back (Patrick Taylor) who began the year on the practice squad. It is worth noting that Samuel needed to have his right wrist examined briefly by the medical staff in the second half of Sunday's loss, but he promptly returned to action and finished the contest without issue. With a strong performance under his belt, fantasy managers who may have benched Samuel during his horrid slump can feel better about reinserting the fantasy star into lineups against Detroit next Monday.
Another disappointing showing
Samuel brought in three of seven targets for 16 yards, rushed twice for three yards and returned two kickoffs for 72 yards in the 49ers' 12-6 loss to the Rams on Thursday night. The biggest play of Samuel's night came on the 41-yard kickoff return he rattled off to start the 49ers' final possession, and the horse collar tackle he was brought down with tacked on an additional 15 yards. His work on offense once again was highly underwhelming, however, and he's now finished with 22 receiving yards or fewer in five straight contests. Samuel's next opportunity to reverse his fortunes comes in a Week 16 road battle against the Dolphins on Sunday, Dec. 22.
May be time to worry
Samuel secured two of three targets for 22 yards while adding 13 rushing yards on five attempts in Sunday's 38-13 rout of the Bears. Samuel was seemingly the only key member of the 49ers not to wake up in Sunday's landslide victory over the lowly Bears. The dual-threat star couldn't get anything going on the ground while George Kittle (6-151-0) and Jauan Jennings (7-90-2) did all the work in the passing game. Samuel is currently mired in a four-game slump that has resulted in 22 or fewer receiving yards in each contest during that span. This Thursday's crucial matchup against the Rams -- who just gave up 42 points in a win over the Bills -- is a prime opportunity for Samuel to look like his former self. If he turns in yet another stinker, managers may have to consider what was once unthinkable -- benching the star player due to poor performance as many fantasy leagues enter the playoffs.
Gains 20 yards on four catches
Samuel pulled in four of his five targets for 20 yards with a lost fumble in Sunday's 35-10 defeat at the hands of the Bills. He did not record a rushing attempt in the blowout loss. Samuel also tallied 208 yards on six kick returns. Samuel essentially put up a bagel in non-PPR formats after coughing up his first fumble of the season while netting just 20 yards for fantasy managers. A snowstorm played a role in the marginal numbers from the West Coast based franchise, but Samuel was already mired in a mid-season slump prior to Sunday's dud. Samuel's most impressive work Sunday came in the return game, as he logged kickoff returns of 60 and 43 yards in the third quarter. With Christian McCaffrey (knee) going down to injury fresh off his lengthy IR stint, Samuel should remain a spotlight player on offense for a team losing some key reinforcements ahead of next week's home tilt against the Bears.
Struggles continue with backup QB
Samuel had just one reception for 21 yards off four targets in Sunday's 38-10 loss to the Packers. Samuel was already in a midseason slump entering Sunday's loss, but a backup quarterback under center made a bounce-back effort less likely. The dual-threat superstar also failed to record a rushing attempt for the first time in a full game this season. Samuel has underperformed this season with just 590 combined yards and two total touchdowns through 10 games. Brock Purdy's (shoulder) potential return in Week 13 would boost Samuel's projections heading into a tough road matchup in Buffalo next Sunday.
Shut down by Seahawks
Samuel had four receptions (on seven targets) for 22 yards while losing one yard on his only rushing attempt in Sunday's 20-17 loss to Seattle. Samuel was blanketed by the Seahawks' athletic secondary with George Kittle (hamstring) inactive and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) done for the season. For reference, Samuel feasted on the Seahawks for 117 yards and a touchdown back in Week 6 when the receiving corps was at full strength. If Kittle is good to go for Week 12 after almost being able to suit up Sunday, then San Francisco's offense will look more like we have become accustomed to. Even if the star tight end doesn't play, fantasy managers are starting Samuel against the Packers next Sunday regardless.
