Harrison Butker Latest News
No action in blowout loss
Butker did not attempt either a field goal or a PAT in Sunday's 38-0 loss to the Broncos. Butker was blanked, just like the rest of his team, finishing without a field-goal attempt for the third time this season. The kicker will finish the regular season having gone 21-for-24 on field-goal tries while making 29 of 31 extra-point attempts over 13 games.
Misses extra-point try Wednesday
Butker converted on his lone field-goal attempt and went 2-for-3 on his extra-point try during the Chiefs' 29-10 win over the Steelers on Wednesday. Butker missed his first extra-point attempt of the game early in the first quarter, but it was a more difficult kick due to Xavier Worthy picking up a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after catching a 7-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes. Butker had no problem connecting on his next two extra-point tries and nailed a 32-yard field goal early in the third quarter to give the Chiefs a nine-point lead. In the three games since returning from injured reserve, Butker has gone 3-for-4 on field-goal attempts and 8-for-9 on extra-point tries. Butker will likely have less scoring opportunities in Week 18 against the Broncos as the Chiefs will likely rest their starters after securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC with their win on Christmas Day.
Makes two field goals vs. Texans
Butker made both of his field-goal attempts and connected on his three extra-point tries in Saturday's 27-19 win over the Texans. Butker's longest field-goal attempt came from 44 yards. It was his second game back after returning from a four-game absence and IR stint due to a left knee injury. He has now made three field goals and six extra points without a miss since returning.
Starting Sunday
Butker (knee) was activated off injured reserve Saturday and does not carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's contest against the Browns. As a result, Butker is set to return to his starting gig. The 28-year-old has missed just two field goals all year, both 50-plus yard attempts, and has missed just four field-goal attempts total dating back to the start of last season.
Trending toward playing
Butker (knee), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Browns, is expected to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The team will need to formally make the move before 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, but the Pro Bowl kicker is expected to return to his starting job despite Matthew Wright's reliability over the past two games (8-of-9 and a game-winning field goal). Butker has missed just four of his 55 field-goal attempts over the past two years.
Officially questionable for Week 15
Butker (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Cleveland. Since the Chiefs designated him for return from injured reserve Wednesday, Butker has put together three consecutive limited practices, thereby giving him a chance to play this weekend. He's been sidelined since Week 10 after undergoing a meniscus trim on his left knee on Nov. 15. Ultimately, in order for Butker to suit up Sunday, he'll need to be activated from IR by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Matthew Wright is lined up to kick if that doesn't occur.
Remains limited Thursday
Butker (knee) remained limited in Thursday's practice, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports. Butker is eligible to return from injured reserve in time for Sunday's game against the Browns, but it remains to be seen if Kansas City will activate him in time. Matthew Wright has handled kicking duties the last two weeks, going eight of nine on field goals and two for two on extra points in that span.
Limited in return to practice
Butker (knee) was a limited practice participant Wednesday. After the Chiefs designated him for return from injured reserve earlier Wednesday, Butker returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since sustaining a meniscus injury in early November that required a procedure. Per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com, head coach Andy Reid was non-committal about Butker being added back to the roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns, as the Chiefs presumably want to assess him in practice throughout the week before deciding on his status. If the Chiefs opt to keep Butker on IR this week, Matthew Wright would be in store for another turn as Kansas City's kicker.
Practicing, but iffy for Week 15
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that Butker (knee) will be designated for return from injured reserve Wednesday, but the kicker's availability for Sunday's game against the Browns is still uncertain, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. With Wednesday's transaction, the Chiefs will have a 21-day window to evaluate Butker before he would need to either be added back to the 53-man roster or spend the remainder of the season on IR. Though he can be activated from IR at any time, the Chiefs will wait and see how Butker fares in practice this week before deciding on his status for Sunday. Before he was shut down after requiring a meniscus trim on his left knee, Butker appeared in nine games and converted 18 of 20 field-goal attempts. During Butker's absence, the Chiefs have used two kickers, with Matthew Wright being the most recent replacement. If Butker is deemed to be anything less than 100 percent healthy heading into the weekend, the Chiefs will likely stick with Wright as their kicker for another game.
