Remains limited in practice
Wilson (calf) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Wilson would ramp up his activity level this week, doing more "live pocket" work during practice. Wilson may soon be ready to step in for Kyle Allen as the No. 2 quarterback, after serving as the emergency No. 3 for the first month of the season. Justin Fields' solid performance to date has him securely in the starting job for now.
Ready to ramp up activity
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Wilson (calf) will have a "strong work day" at practice including reps from a live pocket, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Tomlin said he's still preparing for Justin Fields to start Sunday's game against the Cowboys, per Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site, but it sounds like Wilson will be closer to being cleared for the official backup role in Week 5, rather than having to act as Pittsburgh's emergency No. 3 quarterback for a fifth straight contest. Returning to 11-on-11 reps represents a notable step in the right direction for Wilson, who has yet to put any pressure on Fields as the starter. Tomlin's comments indicate Wilson has been limited to 7-on-7 work at practice in recent weeks. Wednesday's first official injury report of Week 5 will reveal whether Wilson has managed to upgrade to 'full' practice status, or whether the veteran signal-caller still officially remains limited.
Emergency No. 3 QB again
Wilson (calf) is inactive as the Steelers' emergency No. 3 quarterback for Sunday's game against the Colts. After another week of limited at practices, Wilson will remain the team's emergency No. 3 quarterback for the fourth straight contest. As a result, Justin Fields is slated to get another start at QB for the 3-0 Steelers, with Kyle Allen available in a backup capacity.
Questionable for Sunday
Wilson (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Colts, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Wilson, who remained limited at practice this week, has been inactive as the Steelers' emergency No. 3 quarterback for the team's first three games this season. It remains to be seen if that will be the case again this weekend, but either way Justin Fields is on track to make his fourth consecutive start at QB for the 3-0 Steelers, per Dale Lolley of the team's official site.
Limited in practice
Wilson (calf) was a limited practice participant Wednesday. Wilson's injured calf reportedly is improving, but he still hasn't managed full practice participation since the start of the season and may only be Justin Fields' backup even after that happens. The Steelers are preparing Fields to make his fourth consecutive start this Sunday at Indianapolis.
Unlikely to start in Week 4
Head coach Mike Tomlin said that Wilson (calf) will begin Week 4 prep as a limited practice participant Wednesday, and the Steelers are preparing for Justin Fields to make a fourth consecutive start at quarterback Sunday versus the Colts, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Though Wilson has suggested that he's improving in his recovery from the calf injury that he aggravated Sept. 5, the veteran signal-caller has yet to upgrade from limited participation in practice. Tomlin hasn't ruled out the possibility of Wilson increasing his participation by the end of the week, at which point the Steelers could revisit whether Wilson will be available Sunday. Even if Wilson puts an end to his three-game absence and suit up Sunday, he would be limited to a backup role, given that Fields has guided the Steelers to a 3-0 start while completing 73.3 percent of his pass attempts and committing just one turnover.
Inactive again Week 3
Wilson (calf) is inactive as the Steelers' emergency No. 3 quarterback for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Wilson was listed as a limited practice participant throughout the week, but since that represented no change in his level of activity from the week prior, the Steelers are electing to hold him out for a third consecutive game to begin the season. Justin Fields will once again start at quarterback for the Steelers, and he could hang on to the job if he's able to guide Pittsburgh to a 3-0 start to the season with another win Sunday. Head coach Mike Tomlin noted earlier in the week that he wouldn't commit to a permanent starter at quarterback until Wilson is fully healthy, however.
Listed as questionable for Week 3
Wilson (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers after being limited in practice this week, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Though Wilson continues to progress, noting that he's "definitely gaining ground" as he recovers from a calf injury, Justin Fields is trending toward making a third straight start at quarterback for the Steelers this weekend. Wilson has served as the team's inactive emergency third quarterback in both of Pittsburgh's first two contests, with Kyle Allen having backed up Fields thus far.
Still limited at practice
Wilson (calf) remained limited at practice Thursday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Though Wilson still isn't practicing fully, he noted Thursday, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com, "I'm definitely gaining ground. I feel good. I was able to do a lot more work today, yesterday, so we're getting better every day." That said, Varley indicated that the Steelers continue to prepare for Sunday's game against the Chargers, moving forward with Justin Fields working as their perceived QB starter for Week 3. Wilson now has one more chance to upgrade to full practice participation before Pittsburgh's final injury report is posted Friday.
