Wooten will start at inside linebacker against the Buccaneers on Sunday due to Josey Jewell (concussion/quadriceps) being sidelined, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports. With the Panthers severely depleted at linebacker due to injury, Wooten will make his first start of his NFL career Sunday. He did have an increased role in Week 7 against the Commanders, finishing with six tackles (four solo) while playing 59 snaps (46 on defense, 13 on special teams). Wooten will start at inside linebacker alongside Jacoby Windmon while Jon Rhattigan provides rotational depth due to Jewell's injury.
Wooten signed with the Panthers' active roster from their practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Wooten's move to the active roster comes as Shaq Thompson (Achilles) and Josey Jewell (hamstring) are suffering from injuries in Carolina's linebacker corps, with Thompson's being a season-ending one.
Wooten (ankle) has been an active participant at Carolina's training camp, Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire reports. Wooten ended the 2023 season on injured reserve with an ankle injury, but he's now fully recovered and participating at training camp. The 25-year-old will compete with the likes of Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus for an active roster spot at interior linebacker this season.
Wooten was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's matchup in the closing minutes after he recorded a tackle and recovered a fumble on special teams in the first half. Whether he'll be available for Thursday's game against the Bears remains to be seen.
