Chris Rumph Latest News
Out for year
Rumph (foot) was placed on injured reserve by the Chargers on Tuesday. Rumph suffered a foot injury in the Chargers' preseason matchup with the Seahawks on Aug. 12 and he'll now be forced to miss the 2024 season as a result. The linebacker will now shift his focus to being ready to go for training camp in 2025.
Nursing foot injury
Rumph sustained a foot injury in Saturday's 16-3 preseason loss to the Seahawks, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports. Rumph played 19 snaps (12 on defense, seven on special teams) in Saturday's contest. Rumph is expected to "miss some time," but when he will return to practice remains unclear. The 2021 fourth-rounder out of Duke finished with five tackles (four solo) across six regular-season games for the Chargers in 2023.
Participating at training camp
Rumph (foot) is active at Chargers' training camp, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Rumph underwent surgery in November after suffering a broken foot, but he now appears to be fully healthy. The 25-year-old is competing with the likes of Ty Shelby and Bud Dupree for a depth role at outside linebacker with Los Angeles in 2024.
Nearing full health
Rumph (foot) was spotted doing individual drills during Wednesday's mandatory minicamp session, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that Rumph is still "working through" an injury, but it seems his recovery process is moving in the right direction after breaking his foot early into the Chargers' 2023 campaign. Once Rumph is back at full health, he's expected to compete for a depth role in Los Angeles' outside linebacker corps.
Not practicing yet
Rumph (foot) worked with trainers during OTAs on Monday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Rumph suffered a broken foot during warmups of the Chargers' Week 10 matchup, which put an early end to his season. His inability to practice with the team suggests the Duke product is still working on his recovery, but is at least making progress in doing so.
Done for season
It's not a totally trivial loss for the Chargers, who were relying on Rumph to play around 15 defensive snaps per game when he was active. For the remainder of the season, they'll be relatively thin on the edge behind Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Tuli Tuipulotu.
Seen in walking boot
Rumph hurt his foot during pregame warmups Sunday and was unable to play despite being active. While the exact severity of his injury isn't yet clear, it's concerning that he was in a walking boot after the game. His status for next Sunday's game against Green Bay will likely come into focus based on his status in practice this week.
Won't play Week 10
Rumph was set to play, but injured his foot during pregame warm-ups and will not suit up. He has provided depth at outside linebacker while contributing to special teams this season and has five tackles (four solo) in six games this season. Tuli Tuipulotu is set to get an uptick in defensive snaps in relief of starters Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack.
