Returns to practice squad
The Colts re-signed Hull to the practice squad Tuesday. Hull continues to bounce on and off Indianapolis' practice squad, after his spot on the 53-man roster was taken by the activation of DeForest Buckner from IR. The second-year pro has only played one offensive snap this season, Week 7 against Miami.
Waived by Indy
The Colts waived Hull on Saturday. Hull was waived to make room for star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on the 53-man roster. A 2023 fifth-round pick, Hull has spent time this season bouncing between the practice squad and active roster. It won't be surprising if he resurfaces with the Colts in some capacity, assuming Hull clears waivers.
Signs with Indy
Hull was signed to the active roster by the Colts on Saturday. With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) out another week, Hull was always going to be on the roster in some capacity come Sunday. The 2023 fifth-round pick didn't play any snaps last week in the loss to Jacksonville, but Hull does represent quality depth behind the likes of Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.
Returns to practice squad
Hull reverted to the Colts' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log. Hull was elevated to the active roster ahead of Sunday's 37-34 loss to the Jaguars, failing appear in the game. If Jonathan Taylor (ankle) remains unavailable in Week 6 versus the Titans, Hull elevated again.
Elevated to active roster
Hull was elevated from the practice squad Saturday. The assumption is that Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson will operate in a platoon to replace the injured Jonathan Taylor (ankle), but it was Hull, a 2023 fifth-round pick, that actually opened as the starting running back in 2023 with Taylor sidelined, only to suffer what became a season-ending knee injury a few plays into his rookie campaign. Hull then put together a solid preseason, but he still ultimately was waived in favor of Sermon and Goodson. Fantasy managers should take the Colts at their word when it comes to the running back depth chart, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the second-year pro emerge as an option given Hull's success in a relatively difficult Northwestern offense (1,922 rushing yards across 417 carries over his final two collegiate years).
Lands on practice squad
The Colts signed Hull to the practice squad Wednesday. Hull, a 2023 fifth-round pick, was caught up in roster cuts Tuesday, but he now gets a chance to stick around with Indianapolis. As a rookie Hull only suited up for one game before going down with a knee injury, but he's familiar with the Colts' offensive scheme and will likely be on the short list for a promotion to the active roster should the team suffer any backfield attrition. To open the regular season, though, it looks like Trey Sermon (hamstring) and Tyler Goodson will work as the top backups to Jonathan Taylor.
Jettisoned by Indianapolis
The Colts waived Hull on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Hull spent the preseason competing for a reserve role behind starter Jonathan Taylor, but it appears that Indianapolis is more comfortable with both Trey Sermon (hamstring) and Tyler Goodson as depth options. As a rookie last season Hull was only able to play one game with the Colts before going down with a knee injury. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, the team may opt to bring Hull back via the practice squad.
Another solid preseason game
Hull had nine carries for 30 yards but lost three yards on one reception in Thursday's preseason win over the Bengals. Hull was the third running back to enter the game after Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Goodson, but also got time with the first-string offense. Goodson rushed 13 times for 57 yards and caught two of three targets for 10 yards, so the two backs competing for the No. 3 running back job had another similar preseason outing. Trey Sermon hurt his hamstring in the preseason opener, and if he still isn't ready to play by the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Texans, Goodson and Hull would likely split change-of-pace duties behind Taylor.
Gains 31 yards on five touches
Hull had four carries for 26 yards and caught his only target for five yards in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. Hull was the second player to receive a carry for Indianapolis behind Tyler Goodson (6-35-1) despite taking reps ahead of his backfield mate during practice this week. Projected No. 2 back Trey Sermon remains sidelined with the hamstring injury he suffered in the Colts' preseason opener, upgrading the battle for third on the depth chart to a competition to be Jonathan Taylor's primary backup. Hull, Goodson and possibly Zavier Scott (11-55-1) will continue to compete for potentially more than one spot on the roster (pending the team's update on Sermon's health) as we head into the final week of the exhibition schedule.
