Returns to practice squad
Hamler reverted to Buffalo's practice squad Monday. Hamler was elevated prior to Sunday's win over the Colts but ended up being inactive despite Keon Coleman (wrist) and Amari Cooper (wrist) both being out. Hamler will now wait for his next to be called up to play.
Won't play in Week 10
Hamler (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's contest against the Colts. Hamler was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, but he won't play Sunday despite the fact that both Keon Coleman (wrist) and Amari Cooper (wrist) will be sidelined. Buffalo also elevated Tyrell Shavers on Saturday and signed Jalen Virgil to the active roster Friday, and both wideouts will be active for Sunday's matchup. Hamler hasn't yet been active for a game this season and hasn't logged an NFL snap since 2022, when he was with Denver.
Elevated ahead of trip to Indy
Hamler was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Chris Jenkins of the Bills' official site reports. With Keon Coleman (wrist) ruled out for Sunday and Amari Cooper a question mark due to a wrist injury of his own, the Bills have now brought up three receivers -- Hamler, Jalen Virgil and Tyrell Shavers -- as reinforcements for Sunday's game at Indianapolis. While veterans Khalil Shakir, Mack Hollins and Curtis Samuel would all pick up the slack if Cooper sits out a second straight game, there's a very real chance a Cooper absence would result in one of the aforementioned three call-ups seeing meaningful action during the game against the Colts.
Sticking around via practice squad
The Bills are slated to re-sign Hamler via the practice squad Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Hamler spent the offseason competing for a depth role in Buffalo's wide receiver room, and though he didn't make the team's initial 53-man roster, he will get a chance to continue his development via the practice squad. As a player also capable of contributing at running back and on special teams, Hamler's versatility will give him easier opportunities for elevation to the active roster during the regular season.
Set to be waived
The Bills are waiving Hamler, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Hamler, who had been competing for a depth WR/return role with the Bills, also got some reps in at RB during the team's preseason finale. While the 2020 second-rounder isn't going to be on Buffalo's initial roster, Hamler shouldn't be without a roster or practice squad spot for long.
Scores rushing TD in preseason loss
Hamler rushed three times for 21 yards and a touchdown while catching all three of his targets for 11 yards in Saturday's 31-26 preseason loss to the Panthers. Hamler got some reps at running back after Frank Gore (knee) and Darrynton Evans (hamstring) exited Saturday's game, while top three running backs James Cook, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson were resting Saturday. The former Broncos wide receiver filled in admirably, breaking off an 18-yard gain on the ground and running in a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The ability to fill in at running back is another feather in the cap for the versatile Hamler, who also contributes on special teams as a return man. That versatility should help Hamler secure a spot on the 53-man roster ahead of the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Cardinals
