Downgraded to out Sunday
Emerson (head) has been downgraded to out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports. The cornerback was evaluated for a head injury after leaving the field. Emerson made one tackle before exiting. Mike Ford is his backup.
Might have head injury
Emerson is being examined for a possible head injury after exiting Sunday's matchup with the Chiefs, Dan Labbe of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The cornerback recorded one tackle before leaving the contest. Emerson has 67 tackles (53 solo), five passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the year. Mike Ford is his backup.
Full go Wednesday
Emerson (ribs) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. Emerson sustained a rib injury in the Browns' Week 6 loss to the Eagles, but Wednesday's full practice suggests he's already moved past the issue. Expect the third-year pro out of Mississippi State to continue starting alongside Denzel Ward (hamstring) and Greg Newsome as part of the Browns' top cornerback trio ahead of Cleveland's Week 7 matchup against the Bengals.
Ailing after game
Emerson suffered a rib injury during Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Eagles, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports. Emerson has struggled this season and will now have an injury to overcome ahead of Week 7's matchup with the Bengals. Details of the severity of the injury and his likeliness to suit up next week will likely come in the days ahead.
Laments rough start
Emerson acknowledged to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal that he has not played well to start the 2024 season. "Self-evaluation, I'm not playing the ball that I want to play right now," Emerson said. Emerson emerged as a capable cornerback in 2023 and allowed one touchdown on 73 targets, per Pro Football Focus, but progress has not been linear in 2024. He's given up three touchdowns and allowed 16 catches on 25 targets through five games. That included a 41-yard touchdown against Washington last week just before halftime to give the Commanders a 24-3 lead. Things will not get easier in Week 6 for Emerson, who will be tasked with guarding Eagles wideouts A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith (concussion), both of whom logged full practices Wednesday and are expected to play following a bye week.
Clears protocol
Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Monday that Emerson has cleared concussion protocol, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports. The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a concussion after the Browns' Week 4 loss to the Raiders, but it now appears he's already moved past the issue. Emerson has accumulated 24 total tackles and two passes defended across Cleveland's first four contests, and he's expected to continue locking down opposing wide receivers now that he's past his concussion.
Enters concussion protocol
Emerson is in concussion protocol following Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Raiders, per coach Kevin Stefanski, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports. Emerson was evaluated for a head injury after the game, and the tests revealed a concussion. He will need to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in order to play against the Commanders in Week 5. Mike Ford and Cameron Mitchell are options to start opposite Denzel Ward if Emerson misses time, or nickel cornerback Greg Newsome could shift outside.
Might have concussion
Emerson is getting evaluated for a concussion following Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Raiders, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. The starting cornerback made six tackles (five solo) in Sunday's game. Emerson has 24 stops (16 solo) and two passes defensed through four games this season. Mike Ford, Cameron Mitchell and Tony Brown are Cleveland's available backup corners.
Fades injury report
Emerson (ankle) was not listed on the Browns' injury report Wednesday. Emerson tweaked his ankle in Sunday's 33-17 loss to the Cowboys, but the issue appears to be minor as he was a full practice participant Wednesday. The 2022 third-round pick finished Sunday's game with eight tackles (five solo) and one pass defended.
