Mims failed to secure his lone target in Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Seahawks. Mims was a complete non-factor on offense Sunday, instead making his only contributions on special teams as a returner. The second-year wideout returned five punts for 47 yards and and three kickoffs for 69 yards. Mims' lack of involvement in the passing attack carried over from his rookie season, in which head coach Sean Payton did not utilize him consistently. The speedster played just 12 of Denver's 69 offensive snaps, so his usage will need to come up if he can be considered for fantasy purposes. Mims will get his next chance to make an impact offensively when the Broncos host the Steelers in Week 2.

Marvin Mims Latest News
Targeted once against Seahawks
Could benefit from Patrick release
Mims is among the candidates to take on a larger role after Denver released Tim Patrick on Tuesday, DNVR Broncos reports. Patrick, Courtland Sutton and Josh Reynolds have taken most of the first-team reps this summer, with Sean Payton favoring his tall, veteran receivers over quicker, younger players like Mims and Troy Franklin. Releasing Patrick is probably more about cap space than anything to do with the team's other wide receivers, but it nonetheless reduces Mim's competition for playing time in his second NFL season. The 2023 second-round pick had four reception of 38 or more yards in Weeks 1-4 last season, but he then managed only 135 receiving yards over 12 subsequent games while topping 32 snaps on offense just once all year.
Finds end zone in win
Mims caught two of three targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-30 preseason win over the Colts. Mims was on the field for just 17 offensive snaps Sunday, making the most of his opportunities by scoring a touchdown on a one-yard pass from Bo Nix late in the first half. With a strong showing in training camp thus far, the second-year wideout has a chance to take a big step forward in the Denver's offense after a disappointing rookie campaign. The 22-year-old's elite speed makes him an intriguing weapon with the potential to take the top off of defenses. With fellow receiver Courtland Sutton firmly atop the depth chart, Mims will likely compete with Josh Reynolds and Tim Patrick for the second spot in the pecking order.
Catches eye of coach
Coach Sean Payton noted Friday that Mims is "doing well" in training camp, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. With Jerry Jeudy having been traded to the Browns this offseason, targets that don't go to top wideout Courtland Sutton are up for grabs. With that in mind, Mims -- who logged a 22/377/1 receiving line in 16 regular-season games in 2023 as a second-round rookie -- has a prime opportunity to see an uptick in production in his second year as a pro. Also in the mix to fill the void created by Jeudy's departure are free-agent addition Josh Reynolds, veteran Tim Patrick and 2024 fourth-rounder Troy Franklin, but according as Cecil Lammey of denversports.com Mims' speed and big-play ability from either the slot or outside should give him an opportunity to carve out a key role in Denver's offense alongside Sutton and Reynolds in three-WR sets.
Feels better in second offseason
Mims said things are going "a lot smoother" for him in his second NFL offseason, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. In addition to having a much better understanding of Sean Payton's offense, Mims mentioned that he's "as healthy as I've been in a long time." The 2023 second-round pick was limited by hamstring injuries last spring and summer, though that didn't stop him from having a big impact early in the season, including four receptions of 38 or more yards and a kick-return TD within the first four weeks. While Mims remained effective on special teams apart from a pair of lost fumbles, he had only 135 receiving yards on 22 targets in his 12 appearances after Week 4. The NFL's new kickoff rules figure to make Mims even more important for Denver's special teams this year, and he should also be part of a competition for the No. 2 receiver job opposite Courtland Sutton. If not Mims, it'll likely be Josh Reynolds, Troy Franklin or Tim Patrick (Achilles) stepping up as the No. 2 receiver, though a rotation also is possible.
Stock on rise after Jeudy trade
Mims projects to be the team's No. 2 target after Jerry Jeudy was traded to the Browns on Saturday, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Head coach Sean Payton made a point of mentioning his affinity for Mims after the Broncos selected the Oklahoma product in the second round of last year's draft despite not having any obvious need at wide receiver with Courtland Sutton and Jeudy on the roster. That hype quickly faded, as Mims amounted to more of a deep-ball specialist when the aforementioned duo was both healthy, but the soon-to-be 22-year-old will have plenty of time to succeed in the offense this season with Saturday's trade confirmed. Mims' success will obviously depend on who ultimately takes over as the Broncos' next signal caller, but it's unclear if the team will lean toward a rookie or build around one of the few established veterans expected to be on the open market come the new league year.
Targeted once in win
Mims' frustrating start to the 2023 campaign continued Sunday, as the wideout was held without a catch and lost yards on his one carry in the contest. The rookie played 18 of 59 offensive snaps, the lowest of any Denver wide receiver. The Broncos' coaching staff appears firmly committed to bringing the Oklahoma product along slowly this season despite flashing his playmaking ability with several opportunities. Up next for the Broncos is a rematch with the Chiefs. Mims failed to record a target in their first matchup, and the 21-year-old should continue to be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes as Denver hosts Kansas City in Week 8.
