Dwelley logged eight of the Falcons' 73 snaps on offense in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the Seahawks. Dwelley and fellow backup tight end Charlie Woerner (11 snaps) saw limited playing time behind starter Kyle Pitts (55 snaps), a trend that's likely to persist moving forward, especially when the Falcons fall into a negative game script. Though he should continue to suit up on most game days due to his blocking skills and ability to contribute on special teams, Dwelley is unlikely to draw many looks in the passing game from quarterback Kirk Cousins. Dwelley has yet to earn a target through Atlanta's first seven contests.
Dwelley made the Falcons' initial 53-man roster Tuesday, Terrin Waack of the Falcons' official site reports. Dwelley and Charlie Woerner signed similar contracts this offseason and will start the campaign as backups to Kyle Pitts. Dwelley played sparingly on offense in San Francisco, but he's a stout blocker and will be involved in Atlanta's running game, per Josh Kendall of The Athletic.
The Falcons signed Dwelley (ankle) on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Dwelley finished last season on injured reserve after sustaining an ankle injury, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. After spending the first six seasons of his NFL career with the 49ers, the 29-year-old tight end has agreed to terms with the Falcons. Across his last three seasons, Dwelley has appeared in 41 games and made two starts, catching eight of his 12 targets for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Despite his underwhelming offensive production, the San Diego product has been a consistent contributor on special teams (619 special teams snaps over the last three years), and he's expected to compete for a similar role in Atlanta.
