Jones completed 24 of 34 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns while rushing twice for 20 yards in Sunday's 21-15 win over the Browns. Jones settled down after having a first-quarter interception wiped off the board by a roughing the passer penalty, tossing touchdown passes of three and five yards to Malik Nabers in the second quarter en route to 178 first-half passing yards. The Giants relied primarily on their defense and running game after halftime to clinch their first win of the season. Jones has bounced back after struggling in the season opener, leading three touchdown drives in each of the last two games to build some momentum heading into Thursday's home game against the NFC East rival Cowboys, who outscored the Giants, 89-17, across two meetings last season.

It was a better performance than Jones managed in the Giants' opener, but the team still came up short. The quarterback could be benched at any point in 2024 if the Giants decide they're going to move on from him next offseason and don't want the injury guarantee in his contract to lock a $23 million salary for 2025. For now though, Jones figures to be under center in Week 3 against the Browns.
Coach Brian Daboll said Monday that Jones remains the Giants' starting quarterback heading into a Week 2 matchup on the road against Washington, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports. Daboll also said that New York won't be discussing any additions to the quarterback room or any changes to the distribution of practice reps, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. Jones was dreadful in Sunday's season-opening loss to Minnesota, in which he completed 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions (one pick-six). The sixth-year QB will work to bounce back Week 2 in a favorable matchup against the Commanders, but if Jones is unable to spark the offense again his grip on the starting gig may not hold firm much longer.

Jones failed to lead the Giants into the end zone, threw a pick-six in the third quarter and was intercepted in Minnesota's end zone in the fourth. Expectations were already low for Jones after he posted a 2:6 TD:INT before a season-ending ACL tear last season, but he failed to clear even that low bar in his return to action. He'll have a nice opportunity to bounce back in Week 2, when the Giants travel to Washington to face the Commanders, against whom Jones is 5-1-1 with a 10:3 TD:INT and 324 rushing yards in his career.
Most of the Giants' starters, including Jones, are expected to be held out of Saturday's preseason finale against the Jets, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. Jones also skipped New York's preseason opener against Detroit on Aug. 8, but he did suit up for the team's second exhibition contest last Saturday versus Houston, playing the entire first half and completing 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions while adding 12 yards on one carry on the ground. That (and the Giants' preseason joint practices with the Lions and Jets) appear to be enough to satisfy the team's brass in regard to Jones' readiness for the regular season despite the fact that the QB didn't play after Week 9 last year due to a torn ACL. Jones will also be working with a number of different pieces on offense this season -- Darren Waller retired and Saquon Barkley departed to Philadelphia while New York drafted dynamic wideout Malk Nabers with the sixth overall pick in April's NFL Draft.

The Giants' first-team offense stayed on the field for the entire first half, giving Jones plenty of reps in his first game action since he suffered a torn ACL in Week 9 of last season. The 27-year-old quarterback predictably looked rusty and threw two bad picks on back-to-back possessions, one of which came from his own end zone and was returned five yards for a touchdown by Jalen Pitre. Jones had some good moments too though, including a 44-yard connection with Darius Slayton in the second quarter that set up a one-yard TD plunge for Devin Singletary. The Giants play one more exhibition contest next Saturday against the Jets, but it's not yet clear if Jones will suit up for it, or if he won't be under center again until Week 1 against the Vikings.

Daboll didn't go into specifics regarding how long Jones might stay in the game against the Texans, but the 27-year-old signal-caller should at least get a series or two.
Jones isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason opener against Detroit, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. The same is true for most of the Giants' other starters, including new No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers. Raanan notes that the second week of the preseason, against Houston, is when the Giants are most likely to play starters. There haven't been any reports of setbacks with Jones' surgically repaired knee.
