If all the Kansas City Royals had done this year was make the playoffs, the season still would have gone down as the Royals’ best in nearly three decades.

Kansas City’s 29-year postseason drought, the longest in American pro sports, finally came to an end when the Royals qualified for the A.L. Wild Card Game. But the Royals, perhaps playing with house money, didn’t stop there. They overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Oakland A’s to win the Wild Card Game on a 12th-inning Salvador Perez single, then steamrolled the A.L. West champion Angels in the American League Division Series.

Today, they’re a win away from sweeping the A.L. East champion Orioles and doing the unthinkable: Advancing to the World Series.

A World Series bid would be Kansas City’s first since 1985, when George Brett and Co. beat the in-state rival Cardinals in seven games.

After losing 3-0 in Game 4 to fall into a 3-1 series deficit, Kansas City won three straight games to win the Series, including an 11-0 rout in Game 7. It took almost three decades to do it, but the Royals extended their postseason winning streak to 10 with seven straight wins this fall.

Jason Vargas takes the mound for the Royals as they try to complete the sweep. Miguel Gonzalez counters for the O’s. You can watch the game on TBS.
