After years of speculation, the Boston Celtics finally traded point guard Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson and two draft picks. The main contributor coming back to Boston in the trade is Wright.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Wright Played College Basketball at North Carolina
He played only one season for the Tar Heels under head coach Roy Williams and left after his freshman year. In his one season, he averaged 14.7 points-per-game and just over six rebounds-per-game.
2. Wright Was Drafted 8th Overall By the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007
Michael Jordan’s Bobcats — now the Hornets — on draft night in 2007 swung a deal that dealt Wright to Golden State for swingman Jason Richardson. Richardson was never quite the same player in Charlotte as he was in the Bay Area, and Wright never quite lived up to his potential.
3. Wright Has Played For 3 Teams Since Being Drafted
He has played for the two-and-a-half seasons for the Golden State Warriors, a half-season with the New Jersey Nets and his last three-plus seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.
4. Wright Has Carved a Career For Himself as a Backup Big Man
Despite not developing into a starter, Wright has a role as a solid backup power foward and center.
5. Wright Will Be a Free Agent After This Season
According to Spotrac.com, Wright makes $5 million this season, and is in the final year of his contract. He will become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
