Greg Hardy Charges Dropped: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

(Getty)

Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy had his domestic violence charges dropped Monday.

The charges, which included communicating threats and assaulting a female, were filed in May, 2014, by his now-ex girlfriend.

This is just one case in an NFL season plagued by domestic violence.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Charges Involved his Ex-Girfriend

Hardy was convicted of assaulting and threatening to kill his now-ex girlfriend, Nicole Holder.

The two had dated on and off since September, 2013.

2. The Charges Were Dropped Because Holder Was a No-Show

According to the Charlotte Observer, Holder didn’t show up for Monday’s trial, with her lawyer saying she didn’t want to go through another one after the initial conviction. Without her testimony, there wasn’t enough evidence to go forward with the case.

The article says she has not been available for contact since November.

3. Hardy Was Charged in May, 2014

The Observer’s original article on the arrest said the charges would likely be misdemeanors and Hardy wouldn’t have faced jail time.

The charges would have been communicating threats, which usually doesn’t come with jail time for a first offense, and assaulting a female, which is an A1 misdemeanor.

4. Hardy Called 911 the Night of the Altercation

According to the more recent Observer article, Hardy called 911 the morning of the altercation, saying that Holder attacked him after he told her she couldn’t stay the night.

5. Hardy Was Put on the Commissioner’s Exempt List After the Arrest

While nothing has been made official as far as Hardy’s status for next season, he played in only one game last season and then was placed on the Commissioner’s exempt list after the conviction.

Since the charges have been dropped, it is likely that this will be the first step in his reinstatement for next year.

The Panthers made it to the playoffs by winning the NFC South despite a sub-.500 record, but lost to the Seahawks in the Divisional round.
