Golden Boy Promotions announced today that Randy Caballero has withdrawn from his first defense of his IBF bantamweight title due to an ankle injury. The fight, against Mexican Alberto Guevara, was scheduled for February 27 in Fantasy Springs Casino in Palm Springs, California.
“I was very excited to bring my first title defense to my hometown for all my fans, friends and family who have been on this journey with me from the beginning,” said Randy Caballero. “I am devastated that this injury is stopping me from continuing this journey; however I expect to make a full recovery from surgery and will be ready to face any opponent that wants to stand in my way. I promise my fans that I will back and better than ever!”
In recent action Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) battered Kohei Oba to an eighth-round knockout stoppage at the Central Gym, Japan, in his first fight outside of his native California. He next travelled to Monte Carlo to beat Stuart Hall and lift the vacant IBF bantamweight title.
Caballero was returning to his home turf to put his unblemished record on the line against workingman pugilist Alberto “Metro” Guevara (18-2, 6 KOs).
The rest of the night will go on as scheduled with Diego De La Hoya (8-0, 6 KOs) meeting Manuel Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs) and Chinese heavyweight Taishan (2-0, 2 KOs) taking on Roy McCary (3-2, 3 KOs) in a four-round fight.
