UCLA pulled off a 60-59 upset over No. 6 seed SMU with the help of a controversial call on Thursday.
The Mustangs were called for goaltending on a Bryce Alford 3-point attempt with 13 seconds left.
Alford missed, but the SMU defender hit the ball as it was still in the cylinder and the referees awarded the basket to UCLA.
Alford hit 9 of 11 3s and scored 27 points for the 11th-seeded Bruins, who advance to face No. 14 UAB for a shot at the Sweet 16 on Saturday.
Nic Moore scored 24 points for SMU. He missed a 3-point attempt with 4 seconds left.
