Jockey Victor Espinoza has been in this position before. American Pharoah has not.
Espinoza won the Kentucky Derby riding the Bob Baffert-trained colt on Saturday, setting up talk of becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
Premature? Perhaps a bit. But it happens every year.
Espinoza won the Derby in 2014 with California Chrome then went on to win the Preakness Stakes shortly after. Espinoza and Chrome fell short of the Triple Crown, though, as the duo failed to win at Belmont.
Obviously, this is American Pharoah’s first Preakness, which is set for Saturday, May 16, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
The early odds are out for Preakness and the sportsbooks like American Pharoah’s chances, listing the colt as a -140 favorite.
