Miguel Cotto makes the first defense of his newly-acquired WBC middleweight world title when he faces Australian Daniel Geale on Saturday June 6 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
HBO‘s World Championship Boxing will carry the fight live, starting at 10:30pm ET/PT.
“I am happy and excited to be back in New York and fighting at Barclays Center,” Cotto, who is now trained by the legendary Freddie Roach, said. “This is another chapter in my career and I’m committed to train as hard as always and bring a big victory. I’m looking forward to seeing all the Puerto Rican fans on June 6 and to being part of another exciting boxing night in Brooklyn.”
Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s), the only puertorriqueño to be world champ in four different weight classes, was last in action scoring back-to-back wins against Argentine great Sergio Martinez in June of 2014 and Delvin Rodriguez in October of 2014. Going into those fights, 34-year-old Cotto had suffered belly-to-belly defeats at the hands of Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Cotto has trouble in stages against guys that move and use their reach,” Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KO’s) said. “He knows that’s what I’m going to be doing and he’s going to be trying to counter that with aggression and coming forward.”
Cotto’s June 6 fight against Daniel Geale will be his first defense of the WBC World middleweight title he lifted from Sergio Martinez.
