Bolivia and Peru are two countries with a long, complicated history that goes back almost 200 years when the two were temporarily linked as one. The border nations will meet in the Copa America with a semifinal spot on the line. Both are longshots to win the tournament, but they survived the group stage — when 12 teams are whittled to eight — will move one step forward towards the prize on Thursday.

Peru reached the semifinals in the last competition, while Bolivia hadn’t gotten out of the group stages in a tournament since 1997. Seventeen of the 23 players for Bolivia play at home, while 13 of 23 for Peru play in its domestic league. Peruvian forward Claudio Pizzaro will earn his 80th cap in the match.
