It was another slow start for the U.S. Women’s National Team, but in the end, it was another victory. And a huge one it was.
Carli Lloyd’s header for a score on an assist from Julie Johnston in the 51st minute broke a scoreless tie and Team USA defeated China 1-0 Friday night in a Women’s World Cup quarterfinal, sending the Americans into the semifinals once again.
It was the 4th consecutive match Hope Solo and the No. 2 FIFA-ranked U.S. team has held the opponent scoreless.
The USWNT now faces Germany, who edged France in penalty kicks, with a WWC final berth on the line.
In that quarterfinal, Germany and France was the edge-of-your-seat battle you’d expect from two of the world’s best. They played to a 1-1 tie for 120 minutes, then No. 1 Germany ousted third-ranked France in penalty kicks 5-4.
The USA-Germany semifinal match is set for Tuesday, June 30, from Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
It will air on FOX at 7 p.m. Eastern. The pregame show starts at 6 p.m.
The winner advances to the championship match on Sunday, July 5, at BC Stadium in Vancouver. Japan and England meet in the other semifinal.
