In the 14th minute of Athletic Bilbao’s Spanish Super Cup first leg tilt with Barcelona, Mikel San Jose picked up the ball from midfield and fired a shot over the head of Barcelona goalie Marc-André ter Stegen.
San Jose, 26, grew up in Bilbao’s youth system but spent three years at Liverpool, signing there as an 18-year-old.
The goal gave Bilbao a 1-0 lead in the first leg being played at the San Mames Stadium. In the second half, the Basque club doubled their lead.
A goal by top scorer Aritz Aduriz came in the 53rd minute, and he wasn’t done. Aduriz scored less than 10 minutes later, and then converted a penalty to complete a 15-minute hat trick and give Bilbao an incredible 4-0 win against the treble winners. The hat trick was the first against Barcelona since Diego Forlan did it in 2005 for Villarreal.
Prior to the match, BIlbao were 250/1 to win the match 4-0.
