Two franchises forever intertwined meet for an Opening Day matchup on Sunday.
The Panthers and Jaguars, both announced as expansion franchises in 1995, have had very different paths the past 20 seasons. Jacksonville experienced early success, but Carolina has been able to sustain it. Now that both teams seemingly have acquired their quarterbacks of the future, expectations have been raised once again.
For Carolina QB Cam Newton, his fifth NFL season will be his biggest challenge yet. He is working with perhaps the least talented offense in his career, and will be under heavy scrutiny after signing an enormous new contract. It’s a different attitude in Jacksonville, where Blake Bortles hopes to take positive steps in his first full season as the Jaguars’ starting QB.
