It took innings, and crept over the course of two days, but Game 1 of the World Series is, finally, over.
Thanks, Eric Hosmer
The Kansas City Royals standout connected on the game-winning hit to drive in Alcides Escobar and lift the hometown squad to a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets. Check out the dramatic play right here:
The Royals had loaded the bases in the bottom of the twelfth inning but were unable to turn the runners. Instead, they opted to make a little history, tying the mark for the longest World Series run in postseason history.
David Wright made a rare error at third base to get the Kansas City leadoff runner on and Ben Zobrist followed up with a single to right field. The Mets decided to walk Lorenzo Cain, leaving the moment up to Eric Hosmer. He connected on a deep sac fly to right field, driving in Escobar.
It was a particularly big night for Hosmer, aside from the game-winner. Earlier in the game he passed Royals great George Brett as the team’s postseason RBI leader. It was also allowed Hosmer to be a hero just innings after his error had allowed New York to take a 4-3 lead on the Royals.
Now, we get to do it all over again on Wednesday night. Game 2 of the World Series is slated for an 8:07 first pitch on FOX. Playoff baseball is pretty fun.
