United look to inch closer to the top four today against Stoke City, who have regressed since beating van Gaal’s men on Boxing Day.
The Potters were eliminated from two cups last week, falling to Liverpool in penalties in the League Cup and losing to Crystal Palace in weekend FA Cup play. Their last league game was a 3-0 loss to Leicester, leaving ninth-placed Stoke down and dejected. But while Stoke trail United by four places in the standings they also only trail by four points, and a win at Old Trafford would see them back climbing the table.
For United, the goals are finally coming courtesy of Wayne Rooney. The captain has now scored six goals in six games across all competitions, helping to take some of the heat off his manager. United’s best performance was their most recent one, easily dispatching Derby County over the weekend. But beating a lower-tier side never inspires much confidence, so a revenge win over Stoke today would would certainly give the team a boost.
