Cam Newton is the runaway favorite for MVP. (Getty)

With the exception of MVP, which is almost assuredly going to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, the major awards are still largely up for debate.

Offensive Player of the Year could go to a quarterback—Newton, Carson Palmer and Tom Brady all put up big numbers—as if often the case, or it could go to a wide receiver—Antonio Brown and Julio Jones both enjoyed historically productive seasons—which is far less common. Jerry Rice in 1993 was the last wide receiver to win the award.

Defensive Player of the Year figures to go to JJ Watt for the third time in four seasons, but Josh Norman, Luke Kuechly, Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack all have strong cases to make.

When it comes to the rookies, Jameis Winston and Todd Gurley are both strong candidates on offense, while Marcus Peters is the favorite on defense, although Leonard Williams and Ronald Darby are also in the mix.

Perhaps the most difficult race to call is Comeback Player of the Year, which pits Carson Palmer against Eric Berry. Palmer returned from major knee surgery to put up MVP-caliber numbers, while Berry returned from a cancer diagnosis to start 15 games for one of the league’s best pass defenses.
