2016 Boston Marathon Preview
The defending champion for the men is Ethiopa’s Lelisa Desisa, who finished the famous 26.2-mile trek in two hours, nine minutes and 17 seconds last year, giving him his second Boston Marathon victory in three years.
A third win would make Desisa just the eighth man in history with three Boston championships.
“He’s better than ever,” said his coach, Haji Adilo. “We increased his mileage a little bit. Plus, he has experience, especially of the course.”
On the women’s side, Caroline Rotich will look to make it two in a row for her and six in a row for the country of Kenya. She’ll have plenty of competition in the form of 2012 Olympic gold medalist Tiki Gelana, two-time New York Marathon runner-up Buzunesh Deba and reigning Dubai Marathon champ Tirfi Tsegaye.
With the US Olympic marathon trials having happened in February in Los Angeles, there won’t be a major American presence in the elite fields. But with 30,000-plus participants, there also won’t be any shortage of excitement in between Hopkinton and Boston.
