Did anyone see this coming?
If Leicester City reaching the Champions League next season was a surprise, Wolfsburg blanking Real Madrid 2-0 in the first leg of quarterfinal play was an absolute shocker. The Germans got two first-half goals from a Ricardo Rodriguez penalty and another goal from Maximilian Arnold. Madrid didn’t just lose in Germany, they were stifled, totaling just three shots, their lowest effort in a Champions League match since October 2012.
Real Madrid have been to five straight Champions League semifinals, but they’ll need to go against history for number six. The two-goal deficit coming home in Champions League has only been reversed twice in the last 15 attempts: once by Barcelona in 2013 and by Manchester United in 2014. This is the farthest Wolfsburg have ever advanced in the competition, but their five-match UCL winning streak is the best current run in the competition.
